The Australian actress is best known for her roles in films like Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids and Jojo Rabbit
Rebel Wilson is hosting the Bafta Film Awards 2022 on 13 March, with the ceremony returning to the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The Australian actress has gone viral twice in the past after presenting individual Bafta awards and has been praised for “single-handedly breathing life” into the event with her funny speeches and comments on a lack of diversity at the awards.
However the Bridesmaids star has also made headlines recently for her dramatic weight loss. So how much weight did she lose, and how did she do it? This is what you need to know.
When did Rebel Wilson start losing weight?
Wilson, who played ‘Fat Amy’ in Pitch Perfect, embarked on a “year of health” in 2020, with the aim of improving her health.
Speaking to the BBC, she said: “Even though I was still very confident being bigger, and you know, would walk a red carpet, even though I was probably double the size, sometimes triple the weight, of other actresses, but like, I still felt confident in that.
“But I knew deep down inside, some of the emotional eating behaviours I was doing [were] not healthy.”
In 2020, Wilson told The Sun that she has been naming her years, and that “ was always going to be the year of health”.
She said: “Weirdly, this year was always going to be the year of health. I’ve been naming my years now, and, that’s kind of having these resolutions but for the whole year.
“I always thought that I may be psychic and I always felt this year I wasn’t going to work much.
“I turned 40 as well in March and so I thought, this is gonna be it. This is going to be the year for me to just concentrate on the health benefits.
“It’s not like I want to lose weight and get to around a certain number. It’s more than that, it’s about dealing mentally with why I was overeating.”
In an Instagram video, titled “Year of Health 2020”, Wilson also explained that she was motivated to improve her health by the desire to freeze her eggs, in case she wanted to start a family in the future.
She said: “I was thinking about fertility and having good quality eggs in the bank, so I was like, “Okay, I’m going to do this. I’m going to get healthy”.”
Why was her team against her weight loss?
In her BBC interview, Wilson said that she experienced pushback from her team when she revealed she was embarking on her fitness journey.
She said: “I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said “Okay, I’m gonna do this year of health”. I feel like I’m really gonna physically transform and change my life.
“And they were like “Why? Why would you want to do that?” Because I was earning millions of dollars being, you know, the funny fat girl, and being that person.”
It was her role as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect that saw Wilson become a household name.
In the 2020 Sun interview, Wilson said that she was being paid “a lot of money to be bigger” for the good of her acting career.
She said: “I had a job where I was paid a lot of money to be bigger, at times which kind of can mess with your head a bit.”
How Rebel Wilson lose weight?
In November 2020, Wilson checked into the exclusive VivaMayr wellness centre in Austria, which provides guests with a holistic diagnosis and treatment plan based on their needs.
According to People, Wilson’s diet plan was focused on reducing her sugar and gluten intake and eating more whole foods with high alkaline content, such as vegetables, fish and sheep’s milk yogurt.
Guests follow a daily routine, which typically includes an early morning colon-cleansing drink followed by gentle exercise, an individually prescribed breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as individual medical treatments and therapies tailored to your needs.
A week at the retreat costs 3,240 euros, however if you’re interested in following the Mayr Method diet, you can check out the centre’s VivaMayr Diet book.
In addition to her stay at VivaMayr, Wilson owes a lot of her weight loss success to her personal trainer Jono Castano.
